Root Beerthoven at Saengerrunde Hall

  • Saengerrunde Hall 1607 San Jacinto Blvd Austin, TX 78701 United States (map)

This November, Beerthoven's recurring guest quartet Invoke will take you on an exploration into the many meanings of Roots: the origins of the string quartet itself, the roots-music influence present throughout the history of classical music, and Invoke’s own roots in the string quartet genre. Featuring Haydn’s buoyant Op. 20 No. 2, alongside a newly composed response by Invoke, and selected works by W. G. Still, Copland, Ravel, and Florence Price.

"Florence Price was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra – in 1933. Here’s her story…"

Thanks to our sponsors, we will be serving warm pastries and cold beer generously provided by Easy Tiger and Lazarus Brewing as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages--all at no additional cost!

Kids are welcome! Tickets for children as well as students through college age are available for $10. Purchase at the door or email daniel@beerthoven.com for advance student tickets.

This event will take place at the historic Saengerrunde Hall in downtown Austin; home to Austin's oldest cultural institution, the German singing society the Austin Saengerrunde. Experience Beerthoven in the heart of the Live Music Capital of the World!

This project has been financed in whole or in part by the City of Austin’s Elevate Grant Program.

Backyard Performances:

This same program will also be performed Friday and Saturday, November 22nd and 23rd in a backyard in West Austin! Click here for info on these special performances.

About Invoke:

Described as “...not anything but everything: Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Americana and a sound yet to be termed seamlessly merged into a perfect one” (David Srebnik, SiriusXM Classical Producer), Invoke (Nick Montopoli, violin/banjo/vocals; Zach Matteson, violin/vocals; Karl Mitze, viola/mandolin/vocals; Geoff Manyin, cello/vocals) strives to successfully dodge even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental quartet encompasses traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism. Fueled by their passion for storytelling, Invoke weaves all of these styles together to form a unique contemporary repertoire, featuring original works composed by and for the group.

“[Invoke’s music] sounds impeccable without losing its sense of lightness and joy — no small feat.”

Parking Info

Look for parking in the state parking garages immediately surrounding the Saengerrunde facilities. During most of our events these are open and free of charge.

Sometimes there is a parking attendant charging $30, especially when concurrent events take place in the Moody Center. In that event, you may look for parking on street or at the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage, three blocks south of the Saengerrunde on San Jacinto (this is typically free). The Bullock Museum also offers an inexpensive parking option.

About Beerthoven:

The critically-acclaimed Beerthoven Concert Series is a down-to-earth, approachable celebration of classical song, chamber music, and beer; a quirky mixture of Bach and Doppelbock in unique and intimate settings. Beerthoven finds its inspiration in the musical and festive events of the Austin Saengerrunde as well as the private "salon" concerts of Beethoven's time. Beerthoven events feature live classical music, free beer, and other refreshments and snacks in an all-inclusive manner. There is no backstage here; audience members may even find themselves standing in line for beer with the performers.

Programming is intentionally diverse in tone, instrumentation, and featured performers. Beerthoven supports local artists by offering fair compensation and unique performance venues. Audience members will find our prices at the very low end of typical classical concerts--especially for students and especially given the high quality of the exbeerience.
